Abstract

This article seeks to highlight the specific characteristics of educational institutions reproducing social inequalities. Empirical findings are based on the data of two qualitative research studies carried out in Lithuanian town Jonava – focus groups interviews with local politicians and social activists, and in-depth interview  with young adults (24-29 year-olds), raised in low social status families. Jonava case study helped to identify the locally developed educational opportunities for young people living in medium-sized town. The research revealed that educational institutions do not exhaust the possibilities to create suitable conditions for children of social isolation or risk families. Management, cultural educational causes generates the social inequality in schools.
